Gathering Ideas

This past week I did a lot of reflecting about what direction I want to go in and brainstorming what I want to experiment with this quarter. I want to embrace the idea of using food in my work - whether as the subject, part of my concept, or as a material. Catherine recommended that I look at the work of Adriane Herman. Her work is very satirical and investigates consumption.  What really intrigued me was her edible art pieces in which she uses an ink jet printer to print onto cookies and cakes.   In her food based work she explores the non-linear nature of memory as well as the cultural roles of food.

Herman's work really got me thinking about using food as my medium. One idea that I would like to explore is building my own ceramic cake molds and then baking with them. This would be more of an installation piece - displaying the molds and the cakes together. I want to explore making all kinds of different mold forms - ones that would be nothing like a traditional cake mold.

Another idea I want to explore is creating sculptures with desserts. With my pastry business I work a lot with cookies - I make shortbread cookies and then decorate them with royal icing.  Both the cookies and the icing are fairly durable materials, so I want to try incorporating that into my work somehow.

This week was spent mostly brainstorming, but I plan on making a form for a cake mold this weekend and casting it. I need to do some testing with how thick the walls of the molds will have to be in order to withhold temperatures in the oven, so I plan on casting molds of the same form at different thicknesses this weekend.
