This week, I started to go to the locations where clay has been mined in the past around the Golden-Jefferson County area. I wanted to get a feel for the land/landscape/place so I took a few photos just to document a few things that I wanted to remember about the place for self reference, much like notes I can look back on during my research. Here are two images I took on this trip:
As far as photography goes, I have researched a few techniques that I would like to experiment with in the near future with the process of combining photography and ceramics together. Click Here to check out one of the technique ideas.
I also met with Mia for further ceramic instruction. She so kindly gave me wonderful connections with potter artist, Steve Briggs, who goes out and collects local clay to work with. He knows the history and the process of clay production and I cannot wait to get in touch with him next week and further the ceramics part of this journey.
John Roloff is an artist that I have been looking at recently, he has a few body of works that concentrate on the land, in which he uses both photography and ceramics to convey his messages. I am attracted to his work because of the organic material he uses and keeps as organic in the finished pieces. He also attains his materials himself as I plan to do and his concepts are local to Colorado and the evolution of the land over-time. Here is his website. Below are a few images of his work:
Until I get connected with Steve next week, I need to further my research in specifying my concept in a more narrow way, as I am currently very broad with the subjects of location, land, and place.
Mia gave me a few websites to look at, I believe that over the weekend I will have more artists that practice what I propose to do this quarter within my art work and will touch base with you all about their work.
