Doin Things

Dear Blog,

This week I continued the "Devil's Walk" graphic novel/illustration. (Newly titled with some insight from the original!) I finished strip 5 and am continuing the gradual addition of new symbols and new colors to the palette. The story started with tiny hints of red in a black-and-white world but as the plot thickens, the dominance of bright colors expands. At major turning points (like alien contact), I plan to introduce a new Sharpie color. So far we're just dealing with yellow and red because the Devil inhabits this primeval world of dinosaurs and endless desert. I want to harness that Southwest US style for this first chapter. The colors are strongly reminiscent of the brilliant sunsets of Arizona and New Mexico (not to mention their flags), the place I'm from. Below you can see some process work developing the new GUARDIANSHIP symbol and my most recent frame.

This week I made a plaster mold to slip-cast the ceramic elements that will accompany my illustrations. I'm working with Mia to possibly dye the casting slip red or orange to make my multiple forms look like human organs or rocks. Here's a press-molded sample. I plan to make 10 and carve out a little slit in the bottom of each for my paper to slide out of. I'll probably make a new big-meshed screen and pick up some Speedball slip so I can print symbols or abstract faces on the front of each.

In other news, documenting all my sins per diem continues into the month of January, and I added WATCHING MOVIES (the blue line) to the roster with the others. I'm still developing a symbol shorthand for all these.

I have a new print idea to experiment with next week but I'm not sure if it's gonna lend itself to my larger body of work.

Nice progress, Caleb.
I'm sure you've heard of Banksy, there's definitely an aesthetic in common. Check out the work of Barry McGee also, he's got a street/graphic style you might also enjoy.
