The early beginnings..
Here we are, the start of a new year and a new quarter. As touched upon with our very short introductions of intent last class, I am planning to continue my work with the female form in advertising, merging that with design elements found in textiles and fashion. Going forward, the big step to push myself out of my comfy little box, is to move my paintings into a three-dimensional world.
Currently I have three imposing 30 x 40 " canvases in my studio space waiting to be gridded and outlined for painting; they will stack vertically to create one large triptych piece about 40 x 90 " tall. I already have the source image chosen for the portrait, to be painted in black and white. Instead of painting a patterned swatch in color on top as in my previous paintings (shown above), I intend to create a floral pattern from varied materials such as wire, paper, and fabrics.
A lot of the inspiration for creating a sculptural element coming off the canvas is to engage the viewer and the space more. Working with installations and multiples last quarter, often using inexpensive found materials such as pinecones, thread, and cardboard, helped inspire me to want to evoke more of an environment than just a static image.
I'm expecting to get a book in the mail tomorrow detailing to how craft paper flowers, and will start seeking out paper to experiment with soon after. Worst case, if it doesn't work out, I will have an excess of paper flowers to give you all as gifts.

Kim, I learned this year how to permanently preserve real flowers, leaves, branches, and other plants. It's super simple and cheap to do. Basically, it takes one trip to wall mart and about 3-7 days to have everything preserved. If you want to learn how to do it, I can definitely show you how it's done. Just give me a call.
hey Kim,
I am sure you have a billion ideas happening right now but I have been doing a lot of research on early works in photography and I came across some photos by Diane Arbus that connected me to your works and ideals with women and how they become portrayed in the media. He works comment a lot towards the fashion world in the 1960s. It could be helpful/ inspirational to look at some of her works!
